It’s what I regularly hear when a photographer tells their friends and clients that they are quitting their day job to pursue photography full time. I say it myself, because I know that the goal for them has always been to make that switch. Unhappy in cubicles, behind computer screens all day, and working that daily grind they have craved an escape into a more creative and free environment. Knowing that about my dear friends has presented me with a struggle I’ve been facing; I have a hard time verbalizing to these friends the truth behind my days- I love my day job. I absolutely love it. Every year I have the privilege of directing a dance/drill team of between 30-55 high school girls, along with teaching high school dance during the day. Throughout the year these girls become my family (or my “little babies” as I call them). So how can I fully commiserate with my photography peers, when I’m the opposite of miserable?
Don’t get me wrong- I’m tired and stressed often, and sometimes I imagine a world where I work one full time job instead of directing/coaching, teaching, running a photography business, and mentoring-and in the moment it seems heavenly… until I realize I’d have to give something up and right now I just can’t imagine doing that! On top of all of that, I also have to remind myself I won’t be getting any breaks by giving something up- I would just add more of one thing to my plate. The stigma of “make your own hours, photography seems so easy” is all too present when in reality, it is a true business. Marketing, client meetings, editing, workshops, conferences, and then of course the actual shoots fill days beyond the work day norm- so while photographers make their own hours those hours are usually longer and into the night and weekends as well.
Often times my friends, family, and clients ask me “How do you do it? Do you ever sleep? Do you have a life?” and to those questions my answers come simply. I do it because I have passion for every part of my work. I sleep when I can, and realize that when I miss sleep it’s truly worth it. My life is my work (if you can even call it that when you love what you do) and for the time being, I am just fine with that!
So with all that being said, I have to say I am thrilled beyond measure when my friends and fellow creative get to quit their “day-job-probs” and join the ranks of the “create-all-day-crew”. Welcome, and don’t forget to sleep when you can!
