Finding time to prioritize your health and wellness is tough as an entrepreneur, but I truly believe it’s essential if you want to run a not only successful, but sustainable business. Nearly 15 months ago, I decided to prioritize my health, hired a coach, and made some major changes in my daily life. In today’s episode, I’m sharing why I started this journey and five lessons I’ve learned along the way that have led to more success for me.
Trigger Warning & Disclaimer: Before we dive too far into this week’s episode, I did want to share a quick trigger warning and disclaimer. In this particular episode, I do share about body image, dieting, and health. I completely understand if you’re not in a space to listen to this episode and want to respect the boundaries of my listeners. In addition to that, I’m not a nutritionist or health coach, but simply sharing my own experiences.

In this list, I’ve complied a list of my favorite tools that I use for planning in life, business, and even my health journey. I can remember back to my childhood and growing up dancing, body image has always been a concern. That industry is not the healthiest environment when it comes to body positivity or inclusivity, so this has always been something I struggled with. I spent most of my life believing that health was the way you look, but that’s just simply not true.
When it comes to your own health journey, you’ll begin to learn more about your own body, what works for you, and what makes you feel the best. If you’re just getting started on your health journey, I want to encourage you to lean into trusting your body and knowing what feels healthy for you.
Before we dive into this topic, I want to share a resource I’ve created to help you in any journey you’re on, whether a health journey, a business journey, or just a life journey. I’ve complied a list of my favorite tools that I use for planning. These products are items I’ve purchased, use, and currently have in my possession to help me plan for everything in my life. You’re probably wondering what inspired me to share about my own health journey, especially on a business related podcast? Over the years, when I have shared personal stories either here or on Instagram, I’m always met with kind, impactful messages from those who simply needed to hear someone else’s story. So, if sharing my journey touches just one person who needs to hear it, then I feel compelled to share.
Additionally, I learned a really big lesson in my health journey—if you’re not taking care of yourself, there is no way to have a sustainable business. While you may find success, you’ll always find burnout if you’re not putting yourself first. We have to take care of our mental and physical health first in order to take care of our business. No matter where you are on your journey, please know I’m here, I’m listening, and I’m cheering for you.
Balancing health, wellness, and entrepreneurship can be a struggle, but getting started may be the hardest part of the journey. It took a lot of coaching and self love for me to really begin to love this journey, but starting it was another battle.
My entire life, I’ve had body issues. Growing up in dance was tough—facing the expectation every single day to look perfect, or at least in the way the dance industry claimed to be the picture of health. I wanted to overcome this expectation of what health meant, especially when it came to body image.
Fast forward to 2019, when I was constantly traveling for work, speaking at different conferences and really allowing the education side of my business take over. With that travel, I pushed my health on the back-burner. I didn’t make time for moving my body or eating healthy. I was grabbing take out, drinking socially, and not giving my health a second thought. This started to creep into my energy (or lack thereof).
I didn’t feel healthy.
As we went into 2020, we were all hit with the unknowns of the pandemic. As we tried to make the best of it, I was drinking every single night on Zoom happy hours. While I was having a great time, I found that I still wasn’t putting my health first.
Eventually, I made the decision to put me and my body first. That’s when I hired Brittani! You can check out her episode here, where we talk about health and coaching!
Once I started on the journey, not only did I look and feel healthier, I was getting comments that I looked happier! That comment was quickly followed with, well how did you do it?
Starting my health journey was such a wonderful experience for me. It was hard, but I’ve grown so much from it and I’m only halfway to my goal. Throughout this journey, I’ve had a few moments of clarity and a lot of lessons learned that I want others either starting their journey or currently on it to know:
If you can work from love and not hate, the journey will be better for you in the long run. Work hard for your body because you love it, not because you hate it.
Yes, prioritize yourself in the experience… even above your business. This meant that I put a pin in things, cut down on my work, and even said no to opportunities. I did this to prioritize me and my health – whether that was to find time to work out, to grocery shop, to cook healthy foods, etc. Once I started to understand that prioritizing my health didn’t hurt my business, I realized that I’d already built a solid business and had the capacity to step back whereas before, I just assumed I couldn’t.
Whether that means hiring a coach or having a friend that serves as an accountability partner, to cheer for you.
In the beginning, I would let the numbers hurt me if I didn’t hit where I wanted to be. I changed towards taking photos and could see the results. Eventually I started to feel different.
Before going to bed, I’d plan everything I was going to eat the next day. You have the power to claim what you want for yourself and even find the foods that work best for you in your life and health. This is where my list of favorite planning tools and resources will come in handy! Make sure you grab that free list here!
Even though I’m still on my health journey, there are a few things I have found success in. They’ve created a standard for how I approach my health, but have also made the biggest impact.
First, I want you to enjoy the process. If you’re not loving it, you need to change your approach. Your health journey should make you feel good about yourself and your body.
Secondly, I want you to go back to the basics. This was such a benefit for me to really simplify my approach. I started to drink a lot of water, walk more and move my body, and eat a calorie deficit diet. When I used these principles, I found so much success, but it also made every step of my journey easier for me to manage and navigate.

Welcome to so here’s the thing, the podcast for small business owners, entrepreneurs and creative educators who are ready to take their business to the next level, through candid conversations, tactical approaches and a few unpopular opinions. We’re lifting the veil on what it takes to build both a life and a business that you love. I’m your host, Laylee Emadi, a coach for creatives and founder of the creative educator Academy, where I help entrepreneurs step into the role of industry leaders and educators. I’m so glad that you’re here. Now let’s jump into today’s episode.
Hey, friends, before we jump into today’s episode, I have two quick things to share with you. First, this episode is the first one we’re releasing in 2022. And so as we kick off this New Year, I am so excited to share with you that we’re actually changing things up a little bit over here. And we are going to be releasing an episode every other Monday from now on. I have talked with you guys a lot about consistency and the importance of being really intentional on the podcast before and that’s what we’re doing here we are trying to make sure that every episode brings you the very best content that is created with the most intention possible. And of course, you guys know I love to drop a bonus episode here in there. So definitely make sure that you’re subscribed so you don’t miss a thing whenever we do come out with bonus episodes as we go along the year. So that’s the first thing. And the second thing is that this episode is all about health, wellness, entrepreneurship, body image, weight loss, and fitness, all that stuff. So I wanted to make sure to let you know that upfront because I know that this topic, the topic of weight loss, or fitness or health overall can be really triggering or difficult for some people.
And I wanted to make sure that if any of this anything inside this episode has the potential to give you any kind of negative feelings that you have the chance to skip over this episode. Before we start, one of the reasons I’ve been really hesitant to actually share about this for so long. I mean, I’ve had a lot of reasons, but one of the reasons is that I have worked with women my entire life in the dance space in the entrepreneurship space. And I never want anyone to feel anything hurtful about themselves or their bodies inside this space that I have. And I know there’s a lot of toxicity in the health and fitness, you know, area.
And so I want to make sure that you’re protecting your peace if you need to. And I also want to just put out this disclaimer that no matter what size you are, no matter how you view yourself, no matter how you categorize yourself in your body, you know, what is healthy for you. And I just want you to go ahead and lean into that because I struggled for so long thinking that health was a way that I needed to look. And that’s just not true. It took me 30 Something years to get to that point. And so I want to encourage you as well, if you are in the space of like, I have to be this size, or I have to look this way, in order to be healthy, that’s just untrue. really leaning to the fact that you know when you feel health and when you feel wellness inside your body. So I just wanted to encourage you there. One last thing I wanted to mention is that I put together a free supply list for you guys a download that you can get at layleeemadi.com/96 And it is a supply list that people have asked me for four years. It’s everything that I use in my business to plan for the year. So my favorite pens, notebooks, calendars, time trackers, everything that I use to stay organized and on top of things and to make sure that my business and my life run smoothly. So I hope that it’s helpful to you. And I’m really excited to finally have put it together after being asked for it for so long. So again, head to Layli mati.com/ 96. Or you can just go to the show notes and find the link there hope it helps. Alright, here we go with an episode I never thought I’d be recording and a topic that frankly makes me a little bit nervous to share about publicly.
So I guess you’re probably asking yourself, why is she sharing this? So I’ll tell you I’m sharing this because not only have I seen that every single time I share something that might be difficult for me, it inevitably reaches somebody who may be struggling with the same topic, and it helps them and they reach out and tell me that and because I truly believe that when something like that is shown to me it means that like it needs to be shared about even if it’s uncomfortable for me to talk about publicly. So I’m doing it because I really feel like sometimes we in our struggles, can reach so many other people in a similar struggle and kind of help them through. I’m also sharing this because I really honestly believe that I can’t teach about being an entrepreneur. I can’t teach about being an amazing business owner and growing a strong business I can’t teach about becoming you know, an industry leader and educator or marketing or anything without acknowledge that if you’re not taking care of yourself, there’s no way to have a sustainable successful business, there’s just no way our businesses have to have what I always say like our business has the longevity of our lives, like we’re in this for the long haul. And so we have to be able to take care of our mental and physical health if we ever want to be able to grow and sustain our businesses. And frankly, I don’t think I’ve ever heard anybody really share that in this business space, or in the coaching space. And so I’m sharing it now with you about 15 months into my own health journey, and seeing the change. It’s created for me, not just personally, but professionally in my business.
So that’s why I’m sharing it. That’s why I’m being uncomfortable. And that’s why I’m being as vulnerable with you guys as I can, so that hopefully, it helps you create success in your life and in your business, too. Alright, so let’s go ahead and dive in. I want to start by kind of talking about the reason that I started this health journey or this wellness overhaul or this shift in mentality in the first place. And, you know, it is a little hard for me to tackle this topic, because like a lot of people I’ve struggled with body image issues my entire life. As I mentioned, I used to really think that like I had to look a certain way or whatever. And I, I don’t know about you guys, but I grew up dancing, and anyone who’s familiar with the dance world knows that it can be a really unhealthy place for women, especially when you don’t have the, you know, quote, typical dancers body, which I didn’t. And I feel like I’ve been on some kind of diet on and off since I was a child trying to chase this like, dream and this goal of the perfect what I envisioned as the perfect healthy body. And I realized in adulthood that that is just not at all the truth in what my body needs. But a couple of years ago, I ran into a really big problem.
So let’s let’s talk about that. A couple of years ago, let was about 2019. Actually, I’m pretty sure that was our last like, quote, unquote, normal year that we had. And I was traveling so much my business was thriving, I was speaking at conferences, I was gone. I think that year in 2019, I was gone more than I was home. And I was making terribly unhealthy choices. I was eating a ton, I was eating out every meal because I was traveling and not making great choices. I was drinking a lot socially having a lot of fun partying with all of my conference friends and really trying to be like, as present as possible. And just having a blast everywhere I traveled and everywhere I was speaking and teaching. And that was great. It was all fun. And it was all well and good. Until I realized that I’d come home from these conferences, I’d come home from these trips, and I would be so drained, I would be so tired from the events themselves. And from the way that I was treating my body that those unhealthy choices continued out of convenience, I’d eat out because I didn’t have the energy to cook or I wouldn’t go to the gym because I’d be too tired. And I started feeling really worn down and exhausted. I mean, travel itself is hard.
For those of you who have traveled a lot in the past, you know, it’s hard and then add in poor lifestyle choices on top of that. And I noticed that I just started putting on a lot of weight. I was feeling super rundown, I was feeling really lethargic. And I just wasn’t feeling like my best self or even, I wasn’t even feeling like a good version of myself. So cut to 2020 We’re all going through trauma too. But super casually. It was a hard year, a lot of us were experiencing trauma, some of us experience loss. Some of us were just trying to survive and stay afloat. And we all went through a lot that year. And we were all at home. And about halfway through our time at home, I realized that I just couldn’t keep feeling so physically and emotionally and mentally miserable. I was drinking and eating super unhealthily during zoom, happy hours.
And if you guys remember that the era of the Zoom happy hour, I think I drink every single night for like a week at a time. Just because everybody was like turning to zoom happy hours. I obviously wasn’t even able to go to a gym. And I noticed that I started losing energy and interest in working on my business. And that, to me is a huge red flag. Like I mentioned, I just think there’s such a correlation between business and taking care of ourselves as best we can in order to actually grow and work on our businesses. We need that energy right. So I realized that was happening and it was just a really big wake up call for me. And on this podcast, I had previously interviewed Britney’s Moloch who is a health and fitness and weight loss coach.
I interviewed her ironically on so here’s the thing to talk about entrepreneurship and wellness. And so I Once I realized that all of this was going on in my own body in my own life, I made a leap of faith and I hired a coach, I hired Brittany, just like we would in our businesses, just like I always tell you guys on the show, you know, if your business is at a standstill, if you need an extra hand, if you need accountability, if you need somebody on your team, to help you to push you to support, you hire a coach. And that’s my exact same advice that I would do in any area of your life. And so about 15 months ago,
I hired a coach just like I would in my business. And in the past year, I’ve lost about 40 pounds. And I’m about halfway to my end goal, or what I had set as my end goal in the beginning. And being in that middle space right now. And sharing with you is actually really intentional on my part. I think a lot of times people wait until they reach their end goals to like, talk about it to the world and scream it from the rooftops and, and say like, you know, I reached this massive goal that I had, I’ve not reached my goal yet, like I said about halfway there. But I think sharing in the messy middle is a really big part of this podcast and a big part of the way that I like to show up in the entrepreneurial space. And say, you know, I’m not just saying that we’re in this together, like, I really am in this with you. So I wanted to make sure that I was clear about the fact that like, I’m not showing up saying like, look at this massive transformation. Although I’m very proud of what I have accomplished. So far, I’m not done.
And so I want you to know that if you feel like this is kind of a tangent, but if you feel like it’s too late, you’re too far gone, you don’t have what it takes to like, take the first steps into really investing in your own wellness, I want to tell you that you’re wrong. And that’s a lie that you’re telling yourself and that you’re listening to. And I believe that you can make a change. And I believe that you can get to where I am, which is halfway to my goal. And then together, we can get all the way to the end. So that was my little tangent about it. But let’s go back to talking about investing in a coach. Now I know that not everybody can invest in a weight loss or health or fitness coach, I know that that’s not necessarily something that every single person is privileged enough to be able to do. But I wanted to share some of the things that I have taken away that have changed so much for me. And I know that again, one of the reasons that I hesitated to share but that I felt like I should share this journey with you guys is that weight loss and, and health is something that you can’t hide once you start down that journey.
And when I’m saying I can’t hide, I mean, it wasn’t just that people were saying like, Wow, you look amazing, because you’ve lost 40 pounds, it was like you look happier, you look more energetic, you have a glow about you. These are like direct quotes that were kind of hard for me to hear. But were also like, encouraging and and that compliment was almost always I’d say 99% of the time, a compliment that I received would be followed up with the question, How did you do it? How are you doing it? I can’t do it. And so that’s why I want to share this with you. That’s why I want to share these tips with you. And that’s probably I think a lot of you listening or listening for kind of the like, how did you do it of it all. So I’m going to share some things that are a little bit more broad and a little bit more about kind of like lessons that I’ve taken away. And then of course, I know that a lot of you guys want like the nitty gritty, and I will definitely share a few specifics as well. So let’s talk about some of the things that I’ve taken away from my coaching experience. One is something that like wasn’t really told to me, but that I found really showed itself to me in the most beautiful ways. When I started this journey, whether I wanted to admit it or not. I was working from a place of hate, I hated the way that I felt I hated my body, I hated the way that I didn’t look like myself anymore, that I didn’t feel like myself anymore.
And a really big lesson that I learned is that if you can work from love and not hate, the journey will be so much better for you in the long run. work because you love your body, not because you hate it. Work because you love how you feel when you nourish your body. Well, don’t necessarily focus on the fact that you hate that you have to feel like you’re depriving yourself from like, the foods or the treats that you wanted, you should have some of the treats in moderation. And you should love that your body feels better because you’re also giving it the things that it needs to thrive. So that was really like a huge, huge shift in my perspective when I realized, you know, a few months in that, like, I’m starting to really love how I feel and if I can work from love and not from hate is going to help me get to where I’m going. Not necessarily faster, but it’s going to help me actually enjoy The process and enjoy the life that I have to live while I’m working towards those goals. So that’s the first thing. The second thing, this one’s a hard one for me is that you have to prioritize this whole experience, you have to prioritize you ahead of your work ahead of your business. Okay, ouch. Because as an Enneagram, three, this was really hard for me to come to terms with, but it’s necessary. That meant for me, putting a pin in some things I would have maybe in the past hit the ground running and like, turned out a new project.
Instead, I press pause on some things in my business, I cut down on some hours that I would work in order to do the things that I needed to do to prioritize my health, in order to find time to work out, in order to find time to cook, in order to find time to go grocery shopping, those were things that I used to just work through, and not take the time to do. But a lot changed in that once I started to understand that like, okay, Enneagram, three Layli like, this is not saying that you’re failing, this is not saying that you’re not doing a great job at work. And I started taking that time to myself, I actually realized, like, hey, my business is actually pretty rock solid, because I’m taking off time I didn’t use to take off and nothing is suffering, everything is fine. And I’m actually getting better for it. The third thing is talk to somebody, if you’re not in a place to hire a coach, you can’t get a coach, maybe get an accountability buddy, just like a friend. Maybe you go to therapy, and you can talk to your therapist about it. Maybe your partner or your spouse, or just honestly just a friend. To be honest, my coach didn’t teach me anything I didn’t already know about exercise or weight loss or fitness. And if you’re listening to this, Britney and Kristin, my coaches, um, they taught me a lot, but they didn’t, they didn’t really say anything that was like mind blowing information. For me personally, it was about the accountability, it was about the consistency, it was about having somebody on my side cheering for me, and making sure that I was staying on track even when I didn’t want to be. So for me personally, that was super key. The fourth thing I want to share is not focusing so much on numbers.
Now I’m be real about this, I weigh myself all the time. And in the beginning, I was really guilty of letting those numbers really hurt me when they would go up or not go down enough. But my coach had me taking weekly photos. And even if the scale didn’t move, it was okay because I could see a difference in my photos. And then eventually, I didn’t even need the photos because most importantly, I could feel a difference week to week I felt better. I felt energetic. I felt like I was getting back to the old meme. And I didn’t really need scale victories. I didn’t need numbers to go down quickly or as often, because I knew that I was feeling different consistently. Last but not least, you’re going to plan ahead as much as possible. This was so key for me every week, Tim, my husband, Tim and I would talk about what dinners we were going to cook that week. And every night before I go to bed, I plan everything I’m going to eat the next day. I know it sounds really tedious. I know it doesn’t sound like fun. But eventually it kind of becomes fun because you really gain a lot of confidence and a lot of power. And you really get to like claim what you want for yourself. And you get to kind of see over time, like what foods give me the most energy, what foods make me feel great, what foods don’t make me feel so great. And that really, really helps, especially for entrepreneurs, who were probably sitting at our desks all day long.
We’re at our computers, we’re working with clients, and it’s easy to kind of skip meals and then end up overeating or whatever. So it’s really, really helpful. And it’s not set in stone, obviously, like things change day to day. But it’s so helpful and cuts out so much anxiety and like so much room for the potential of over eating because I’ve skipped meals in the past. So I really like it. I’m a planner anyway. And I just feel like being able to kind of plan ahead what I eat as much as it sounds really like it sounds just it sounds really extra if you’re not in the practice of it, but I also like I plan what I’m going to do during work the next day too. So I really enjoy planning ahead. I think for me it has been like a key element of being successful in my business and now being successful in my weight loss as well. So those were kind of the more general lessons that I’ve taken away from coaching and I know that some of you listening to this or tuning in because you want to know exactly what I did like specifically to lose about 40 pounds in a year. And by the way, 40 pounds sounds like a lot a year it’s pretty slim. Whoa.
And it was a kind of painstakingly slow for me for a while. But I want to encourage you like, slow is good. We have our whole lives ahead of us. And so like I’ve shared before, I’m about halfway through. But I want to tell you like, I’m about halfway to a weight loss goal, but I honestly don’t care when I reached the end goal. Because A, I love the way I feel living this healthy lifestyle. I love the habits that I’ve picked up, I love the way that my body feels, I love that I can be flexible, and I can actually enjoy my life. So that’s one reason I don’t care when I reach the end. And the second is that I’m 100% confident that I will reach an end goal that is right for me and right for my body. It may be a different end goal than the one I initially set. Maybe it’s more, maybe it’s less. But I’m 100% confident that because I love the way that I feel living this healthy lifestyle. It doesn’t matter when it happens, because it will. So I want to give you that encouragement before I share the things that I’ve done that works for me. Obviously, disclaimer, I’m not a nutritionist, I’m not a doctor. But what I can share again is what works for me what I have seen success in and that is one enjoying the process itself, like I said, and appreciating how every single step that I take toward my health actually feels like how my body is actually taking that feeling and like appreciating it. And two is going back to basics. And these are the specifics. These are the things that I hesitate to even say it but like the things that sound easy, but they really aren’t that easy, because you have to be so consistent with them. And that is one drink lots of water, like a lot of water, like a gallon a day. So drink lots and lots of water and walk a lot.
I know everyone’s always like, Oh, get your steps in. And it kind of sounds funny, but you really do like I feel like the times where I was consistently hitting 10,000 steps or more a day, I saw the most change in my weight loss, it wasn’t even like, my workouts would be the same or I could work out less and walk more and I would lose more weight. It’s It’s kind of crazy how simple it is up your activity. So do add in workouts if you’re not working out consistently. And I don’t do crazy workouts you guys like even if you can only do 20 to 30 minutes a day, or you know, an hour, three days a week, whatever works for your schedule, but just up your activity level, especially as entrepreneurs like I said, I know we’re probably at our computers in our inboxes constantly working on projects, designing things doing other things. And so it’s so important to stand up and get your steps in, get some activity and get your blood flowing. It’s just so so important. The third thing is eating in a calorie deficit. Again, I’m not a doctor, I’m not a nutritionist, I can’t tell you exactly how many calories you should eat. But typically, obviously, deficit you want to eat less calories than you’re burning daily. The key here is not to stop yourself and not to deprive yourself and not to eat so few calories, that you’re actually like not feeling good about yourself and you’re not feeling energy, you need to make sure you’re eating enough calories to have that like that healthy glow, that energy, that excitement, that ability to have more activity in your life. Don’t do you know, I can’t obviously I’m not here to like make you feel bad if you’re doing some kind of, you know, no carb or a fad diet or whatever. But I’m just sharing what’s worked for me,
I’ve done it all I’ve done every single diet you could probably think of in your mind right now. I’ve done the no carb I’ve done I mean, I’ve literally done everything. For me, I eat some carbs, I eat some fats, I eat lots of protein. And when I was feeling lost, I got a coach who you know, you can consult a nutritionist, a doctor a trainer, but the basics. That’s what’s worked for me, drink a lot of water, walk a lot up your activity, eating a calorie deficit. And last but not least, I’ve said it a million times. And I’ll say it again, you’ve got to be consistent. You’ve got to really lean in to the feeling of, of like I said, joy and appreciation for what you’re doing for yourself, to enjoy the journey to enjoy the time between point A and point B, the time you’re taking to get to your goal. And don’t focus so much on the end goal as much as you’re focusing on the day to day, taking care of yourself and making sure you’re working from a place of love and not of Hating Your Body of loving your body and wanting to feel good and wanting to be able to have that energy to pour into your life, into your family, into your kids or your hobbies and of course into your business. Because again, we cannot keep sustainable successful businesses. If we are falling apart. It’s just not possible. So I I really hope that this episode helps you kind of take control of the way that you’re feeling. Again, I want to encourage you, I want to remind you, all of these like caveat of, we are all built differently, you do not have to be a certain size, or a certain weight or a certain look, in order to be healthy. You know, if you feel healthy, or if you feel unhealthy, you know, what you need in order to succeed in all of these areas of your life.
And I want to make sure that I’m encouraging you to take control of that, and to take ownership of that and to take pride in that. And just know that there’s no such thing as too late, or too old or too far gone. Every step forward every day we have is a new day.
