Is launching a podcast on your dream list of things to do this year, yet you’re overcome with fear each time you think about it? In today’s episode, my own podcast producer, Haylee Gaffin of Gaffin Creative joins us to share her thoughts on if the podcasting market is oversaturated, overcoming fears in podcasting and interviewing, and what resources are available for those considering launching a podcast!
Is Podcasting an Oversaturated Market?
While it may feel like everyone has a podcast, does that mean you shouldn’t have one too? Consider this, your purpose in launching a podcast shouldn’t just be to top the charts on podcast apps, it should be to serve your existing audience and potentially grow from there. A podcast is a great way to serve your audience with your own knowledge and experience, especially as an educator.
Think about it this way: you’re on Instagram and Facebook, and maybe even TikTok. Do you think those are oversaturated markets? Everyone has one, but they’re simply serving their audience.
When it comes to what will hold you back, self awareness is important. Not everyone should have a podcast, but that’s truly based on your needs, goals, and commitment to a podcast.
Overcoming Fears in Launching a Podcast
Starting and launching something new can be intimidating can come with fears and roadblocks that you have to overcome. Whether it’s in knowing how to do something, honing in on your skills, or just taking the leap. For podcasting, there are a lot of unknowns when you’ve never worked behind the scenes on a podcast!
First and foremost, consider hiring an expert to walk you through the process of launching your podcast, but if that isn’t in your budget, find the resources that those experts are offering. You can check out Haylee’s podcast, blog, and resources at gaffincreative.com!
Step One to Launching Your Podcast
If launching a podcast is a dream of yours, Haylee suggests that your first step to planning is to define the goal of your podcast. While you know you’re going to serve your audience through each episode, what is the goal that will benefit you or your brand, specifically if you’re starting a business?
If you don’t have a goal defined, there is nothing driving you to moving forward in your podcast launch or even guiding you in all of your planning. When you’re investing your time, energy, and/or money into producing a podcast, you need to understand exactly what you’re hoping to get out of it.
Overcoming Fears in Interviewing on a Podcast
Haylee has first hand experience in overcoming the fears of being the host who interviews guests on her show. For the first year of her podcast, Haylee didn’t release a single interview. When she decided to do so, she interviewed her mom so that she felt most comfortable on the show.
There were still nerves and fears that came with that, but it does take practice and awareness of being in the moment. There will be times where you, as a nervous podcast host, may say the wrong thing or stumble over your words, or even create awkward silences in your conversations, but that’s normal and something that you can work on. That is what a podcast producer can help you with by editing out the imperfections.
Getting good at interviews is takes time, practice, and preparation. Sometimes that means creating interview outlines while other times it means writing a full script. The trick is to figure out what works best for you!
Haylee’s Unpopular Opinion on Podcasting
As a podcast producer who’s been in the space since 2017, Haylee doesn’t think that everyone should be a podcast host. Maybe they started before they knew what they wanted or don’t take it as seriously and aren’t committed, but podcasting is a learned skill and if you’re not willing to put in the work, it may not be the best fit for you.
If you’re trying to decide if podcasting is the right path for you, consider pitching yourself to podcasts to see what the behind the scenes looks like.
